  • Introduction: Mathematical Goals
    • This lesson unit is intended to help you assess how well students are able to solve problems involving area and volume and, in particular, to help you identify and assist students who have difficulties with the following:

      1. Computing perimeters, areas, and volumes using formulas.
      2. Finding the relationships between perimeters, areas, and volumes of shapes after scaling.
  • Formative Assessment Task : A Fair Price
    • Students use formulas to solve problems related to fair price. Students compute perimeter, area, and volume using formulas and find relationships in perimeter, area, and volume after scaling.

  • Common Core State Standards
    • Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practices Common Core State Standards for Content

      This lesson involves a range of mathematical practices from the standards, with emphasis on:

      1. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
      1. Look for and make use of structure.

      This lesson involves mathematical content in the standards from across the grades, with emphasis on the following Domain.Cluster:

      • G-GMD: Explain volume formulas and use them to solve problems.
  • Lesson Structure
      • Before the lesson, students work individually on an assessment task that is designed to reveal their current understandings and difficulties. You then review their work and create questions for students to answer in order to improve their solutions.
      • During the lesson,
        • Whole-class introduction, then
        • Students work in small groups to consider the results of doubling the measurements of a range of shapes in two and three dimensions.
        • Whole-class discussion
      • After the lesson, students return to their original task and try to improve their own responses.
